You need a minimum of 20 lessons between gradings. Your Sensei will evaluate you
as the grading approaches and will only let you grade if he and you are both confident
you will pass.
It is not the end of the world if you do not pass a grading. The pressure on the day can cause the mind to go blank! Grades are held approximately every 3 months, so there is always next time.
To answer that favourite of questions.. ..a black belt can be achieved in 4 years with regular training.
